hey guys,  I am ready to wire up the layout.  now, I have 3 MTH z1000's brick and controls.  I also have 2 KW's I can use for accessorys.  I converted all the buildings to LED lights.  so draw is minimal.  what guage is suggested? solid type? or is stranded ok.  should I run a larger guage bus wire for pos and neg and tie into that wire?  I have 14 buildings MTH style and some have the window lit signs that flash or do things as many of you know.  problem is what do they draw and even if I have LED lights, will the signs draw too much.  So wire guage is important for the buildings.  The street lamps are LED also now, about 12 lights.  I have one MTH crossing gate set, and a traffic light MTH set also.  Nothing else.  a few billboards ill be lighting up.   The LED are 12v  most of the buildings have about 4-8 lights and the hotel has 12.

I dont know what to do, split them all up.  7 buildings on one and 7 on another MTH brick, then use another brick for street lights.  then use the Lionel KW for the crossing and traffic lights.  12 guage automotive wire?  and use 16 guage leads from the building to the 12 guage bus wire?  im guessing now!

thanks

Chris

hey guy, back at you, solid or stranded doesn't matter.  Use whatever is easiest for you.  For all items you mentioned, a handy tap wire is "Southwire 500 ft. 20-2 Bell Wire Twisted Red/White Cable" from Home Depot.  You can buy it by the foot locally and it's called bell or thermostat wire.  (solid #20).  #16 or 18 Buss wire to transformers will carry these loads just fine.

Regarding number of transformer taps, start with a couple of buss lines with 5 amp circuit protection.  If 5 amps doesn't hold the load, split the load 3 ways by adding another 5 amp buss line, etc.

OR, do the math using this information and decide how many watts you will be using. Load Calculations with tables, charts, and formulas

thanks a bunch.  I thought of using a 18 guage buss wire down the middle and tapping off with scotch locks (automotive 3M type I have used for years in my cars.  Then its easy to do.  this layout is temporary, I thought in the future of using a screw down type buss like in the electric box, but that will be for the big layout.  thanks for the guaging and I will be home depoting today.

thanks

Chris

I stopped at the Depot and bought some of the red/white bell wire for the buildings to the Bus wire.  then got some 14 guage for the bus wire.

my question is can you use a Gound bar for a electric box ( the bus bar for the grounds) as an electric hookup?  I cant see why you cant, and they are 5 bucks for a 20 post.  looks like alluminum.  I wondered if that was an issue electrifying it?  I would use 2 bars for pos and neg.  Run a lead wire from transformer to the bus bar and then you can screw down the individual wires from the houses or lights to the bar.  any thoughts?

Those panel ground bars work fine  Attach them to wood with drywall screws.  Since they're made for larger wires, smaller wires may need to be twisted together.  Just tug on wires to be sure they make good contact.

When there is a lot of wiring these are fast and easy with positive contact for all size wire.

Screw Clamp terminal Strips for circuit boards come in several sizes.  These are surplus.
