It has not changed from the way you would do it with the old TIU. Just use the Variable outputs on the WTIU to control track power with the app to run conventional engines.
Ok should I run my power supply to the tiu directly or the track as I have it currently

To the WTIU- per the instructions.
The new WTIU comes with a small power supply to power the WTIU logic. You connect your track power transformer to the variable input so that the WTIU variable channel can modify the output voltage via DCS commands.
The fundamental naming convention of the WTIU channels is:
Fixed- meaning the channel cannot modify or manipulate the voltage input vs output. The name is from what the channel can do
Variable- meaning the channel has additional circuitry and function and can vary the power from input to output to allow for variable output from a fixed voltage input. Again, the variable channel can vary the power- hence the name.

Also, I think you might also have to buy the in app upgrade license to control variable channels?
I've had the upgrade so long with the old WIU and TIU, but I'm pretty sure that is also a requirement.
While I'm trying to deal my wtiu, I'm having trouble getting connected to my home net work and inconsistency on the mth network. I've rebooted my router holding the tiu next to the router. My router is not a wps one. Also I wish Mth had put an on/off switch on it and a built in power supply like Lionel did with Cab3
