Picked one of these up used. I really liked the looks. Runs smooth at low speeds. Made around 2004 with odessey.

Smoke unit needs to be rebuilt. Smokes nice but only for a few feet and only at slow speed. Probably scorched due to running dry.

Will upgrade per Lionel recommendations.

High speed performance is lacking. Reset engine three times and also cleared any High voltage setting per manual.

Specs indicate High-torque Pittman® motor. Also tender buzzes when Railsounds are shut off. Not sure if that is normal.

I assume it is brushless can. But do not know that much about them. Do these wear out due to use?

My other switchers both conventional and TMCC are working fine on the track and all are capable of exceeding safe operating speed on 0-36 fastrack curves.

I have no concerns with this deraiing due to its low high end speed. Odessey on or off does not seem to make any noticeable difference.

In conventional mode, it takes alot of voltage to get moving and is even slower.

Cleaned all the track contacts and wheels.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

FMH

It is a Pittman motor, but a very small one.  Probably the largest that would fit in the firebox of this tiny loco.  In real life this was a branch line loco that rarely exceeded 45 mph.  My guess is that it's operating normally.  A lot of other O gauge locos don't run as smoothly, and their top speed is way too high.  Enjoy the slow and realistic operation of your Mogul!

Least I do not offend anyone, I will qualify that this is not a generalization but an observation about a specific time frame and class of product. But after spending several hours of quality time on my 6 x12 test loop with my newly acquired but used 2-6-0 (2003-2004 era) and my nearest equivalent, my k-line b6, both same MSP of $599 and both purchased used at around $310, the jury is back. While the 2-6-0 is a keeper, due to its looks and the engine specific towercom, the K-line product wins hands down for superior slow speed smoothness, smoke output, sound quality, pulling power, detailing, and front end electro coupler. The Odyssey speed control adds no value because the 2-6-0 is so underpowered it will never run out of control. Even the brakes are lame compared to K-Line which are probably a little too powerful. Like getting used to power brakes after driving Bendix manuals for ten years as a kid. But I do not regret my purchase and it will find its niche in the roundhouse. And I think I have accomplished my goal, or at least come close to, of getting at least one of all of the available versions of small steam locos. I am working on engine houses next. Already did the caboose thing. And the Lincoln penny thing as a kid. And I am the first to admit that my hobby has a bit of an obsessive quality to it but very rewarding in terms of a creative outlet and satisfying my innate curiosity. FMH
