My kids got me a MTH 30-1316-1 Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 Berkshire Steam Engine #763. I put it on the programming track to set it up. It recognized it as #763 but when it sets in neutral it chuffs. It will not go into reverse. The whistle works. The bell works. the front or rear light doesn't work and the brakes squeal all the time while setting still and when you try to start it out at 1 or 2 MPH it takes off fast without any control. I tried factory reset but it does the same. Any ideas from anyone on what my problem would be? Thanks Guy E Hilleary

Personally, it sounds like an electronic failure, or possibly the tach sensor. If you're getting chuffing when you should not be moving, it must be seeing tach pulses.
That is a 5V board so it could be a bad board, but there are other possibilities too. Do you have a new battery installed? Make sure all harness plugged into the board in the tender fully. Make sure the harness to the engine plugged in. Try it in conventional and do a conventional reset. If still no joy, the board needs to be tested separately out of the engine. You can have a bad harness, some of the 5V needed a resistor added to prevent chuff in neutral, the tach sensor sounds bad.
I assume this is used so there could be more than one issue. Did you check the run time and miles? G
Thanks... I'll check it out. It was suppose to be new but Odom is 46.4 Battery says Ok and Chrono says 4:54
That is low usages, but the engine is an older one. G
With a 5V board, that's at least 10 years old, the MTH site says 2004.
