I just purchased a prewar 3814 Merchandise car. It tries to function, but the sliding door is erratic. It appears that a spring at the lower edge of the door came disconnected in shipping. How do I remove the body to troubleshoot and repair the mechanism? I will also want to replace the dried out wiring with crumbling insulation. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Photos would be helpful.

You may want to try removing the roof and doing the spring and mechanism repair. You'll need to gently squeeze the sides of the car while pulling up on a corner of the roof. Protect the paint under the brake wheels with a weak tape like painters tape. This will allow access to most of the innards and door hook up's'

The body is a different process. There is a box covering the coil assembly. You need to squeeze this to un-tab it from the tabs on the floor. It will then lift off allowing access to the coil connections. The body is then held on by tabs. The run along the edge of the under side of the frame. Very carefully pry the tabs up. Then work the body up and off the chassis.
