If you are using a PW ZW, Z-4000 transformer or other Pure Sine Wave form transformer with throttle, just lower the voltage down with the throttle handle to 16 volts and see if that's better. The remote will still say 5 volts on the initial starting voltage, but it will actually be less on the track.

The motor in this 4-6-0 is the exact same motor I pulled out of a Canon printer that gave up not too long ago.

Which Z-750 transformer are you using? There are 2 versions, the early one that puts out 24 volts and the later one that puts out 21 volts and has the polarized plug.
A Lionel brick or a Z-1000 that puts out 18 volts and should work better for you.

What about a pair of diodes to drop the min AC voltage by ~0.7V or from 5VAC to 4.3VAC. A second pair would drop it another 0.7V. Of course you lose this on the upper end too so would limit your top speed.

This engine starts maybe even 4-5 smph. I've had it up to 7.5 volts on the handheld and it's moving pretty quickly, but not flying off the track. Maybe with some weight in the tender, more brass details on the engine, and some cars behind it it'll slow down to an acceptable speed. When I ran it I didn't even have the front truck mounted to it. It's got some huge wheels, 72-75 inches (I need to measure them) and would look good pulling some passenger cars.

I can't do much more to the engine until I get some parts from P&D and PSC, so for now it's back on the back burner.
