Joe Barker - You lucky person - to see all those wonderful engines and trains. I was born in the mid-sixties so I missed the last days of steam. However, I live near two great preserved lines so I get to see some wonderful loco's.

Also, this weekend last I went to the railway Museum at York where I saw so many good things.

Shame I don't have that time machine !

All the best

David;

I'll take one from column A and one from column B. Smile I passed through London going to and from Europe when I was in the Army but never had the chance to spend any time sightseeing.
I always thought that British steam's biggest attraction was it's unusual look (compared to what we have seen on this side of the pond).
Dear All,

I am glad you like the video

The video is sadly a bit of an illusion as the track is only a 20 feet stretch of straight track. I am working on a fixed loop but still awaiting proper planning consent from the good lady ! Still it was nice to film some moving trains !!

And it is nice to prove that the sun does shine in England (but not today)!!

All the best

David
Big Grin just to let you know across the Pond, one of the old chaps who lives in the Hexham Area has had an out side Garden O Gauge system for some thing like 30ty odd years no matter what the weather all he dose is just wipe the lines down and away go the trains and you need to see what he and his son have,
people from all over the North East go and have a look over his garden wall
they run all sorts of O Gauge, most of the good locos I show you from our Hornby Club belong to them the son makes white metal O Gauge kits and is very good,

yes it rains and it gets cold but we can take it, Razz there is all so a fair amount of live steam in most gauges in England Wink

You are most welcome. I contacted the gentleman (Fred) and he sent me the following response:

Matt,

Some info on my railway:

The rail:
My garden layout was made to run gauge 1, 45mm (steam and electric, 2-rail). A few years ago I bought a Bassett Lowke gauge 0 live steam mogul and thought it was not a good idea to ran that inside the house, so I changed my garden layout. My layout has two separate parallel tracks of 30 meter lengths. One of these I changed by adding a rail on 32 mm and a middle rail so that I can run also 3-rail electric. The rails are insulated so I can run (apart from live steam and clockwork) every possible electric train. The track is nickel-silver rail with plastic sleepers made by Tenmille in England; this is weather proof material. Until now I have not found a train that cannot be run, including JEP, Lowke, LR, Gils, Lionel, MTH, ETS and finescale trains; but it is a very simple track, no switches/turnouts.

The layout:
The rails are loosely lying in stone ballast. The ballast is held in a metal gutter. The gutter is held on a metal construction, the metal poles are about 60 cm in the ground. All metal is rust-protected (zinc). This construction was designed by a friend and made by a construction firm. It is standing already 21 years; there is no maintenance! The weather over here can be quit wet and snowy (see the video).

There is another gentleman (ARKWIRGHTIS) who lives in the UK (I believe he may be a forum member) who has an outdoor railway using wood platforms. I believe they are sealed as well as painted. Here is a link to a YouTube he uploaded about three weeks ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnGZAEYJwK8

I have seen a lot of different techniques for outdoor railway construction on YouTube -- some simple, some complex, but all of it seems to work well.
Wink I would like to see it my self but from what I can gather it is over a wall and for all David and his dad do run it, it's a case of catch us if you can, but it is there and both David and his dad belong to our club I think most of Davids locos are from that firm up near Consett up near me I just forget the name of it, DJH or some thing like that,
he dose a fantastic job
I will speek to David on Sunday it's Club day see if I can get a video some time
Cool
David,
Wonderful video! Trains are mostly a winter sport for me, and in the spring and summer i garden. You have the best of both worlds there! Your roster of engines is amazing, and your garden looks lush and effortless. I must admit i'm jealous. Smile I would love to build a layout for the garden, but i'm sure the damned deer would eat that too. Wink

John.

An A4 by anybody would be great !! Does anybody know if MTH will make more different European loco's ?

As gorgeous acquisition, David, as is your entire collection.

Thank you Allan.

I might have another locomotive arriving sometime this week. If the weather is good I will post some pictures next weekend.

Ace have just issued details about their LMS Princess Coronation Streamliners for 2012 so we should see some in the garden sometime next year !!!

There is the possibility of a live steam Streamliner !

All the best
