Any advice for building lift-up section?

I am about to build my first hinged lift-up section on my 3-rail Atlas track layout. I have no idea what I am doing, but so far I have decided on the following strategies.

1) Make sure to use all straight track before, after, and through the lift section.

2) Make sure the axis of the hinges is higher than the rail head.

What else?

Maybe kill power to tracks while lift is up, for a safe distance before & after the lift up.
