My CSX #812 SD80MAC arrived today.  Here are some photos.  Looks like the fuel tank is still like the previous tooling.     The sounds were super loud and RPMs have a nice high pitch rev.

Also, as mentioned in another thread.  This is no way that a battery is fitting in without taking off the shell or removing that rear hatch tab!

I'm on the fence about returning this unit.  The shallow fuel tank is a bummer.  And it's not as detailed as my Legacy Dash 9 and Legacy SD70M-2.  I run TMCC, so the battery issue isn't a hugh deal.  But, a battery is nice in case of a track power issue. (Switches)  I'm happy with the paint job.  I was nervous, since in other photos the blue and yellow looked too light. (Camera Flash?)  But the CSX dark future scheme looks fine. The Legacy Railsounds are top notch!!  Railsounds and the paint scheme will probably keep this engine in my stable.

Nice video, but I just cannot get pass that fuel tank on the sd80. It is very disappointing that Lionel screwed up what could have been a great looking engine. The CSX scheme is very well executed and the sounds are incredible but the fuel tank is a deal breaker for me. The LHS had 13 pre orders and 9 guys refused delivery because of the tank.

While it is ashame that Lionel missed on the two key items(tank should have been an obvious no brainer), for the right price I would still buy it. (Original CONRAIL scheme preferred -  - ).

There are always some compromises we as individuals in the hobby make.

The other folks have the right to decline a product that does not meet their expectations. It is their money.

 IMHO

I was supposed to pick up a Polar RR version this weekend, but had to refuse it as the Styrofoam padding was literally glued to the deck on the ends (seems it was packed up before the paint was dry - this is starting to become an epidemic, or I have got to start playing the lottery with the odds I have seen over the last year or so)

A shame, because the rest of the unit looked to be in good condition in terms of the finish.

I couldn't help but notice that Mike's pictures still had all of the Styrofoam installed.

Were you able to remove the Styrofoam on the ends without it taking off some of the deck paint with it, Mike?

No doubt the fuel tank is shallow & no doubt the tooling is the same as the previous sd-80 from the 2000's era. It still a nice looking and sounding locomotive. I runs smooth as well. I guess we will have to wait for a Vision line SD-80 for sdditional $300.00 to get the fuel tank right LOL.

I took a chance and ordered 2 CSX units. In a previous post I said I talked to a Lionel rep at the Spring York and he said they would have scale tanks, well they don't so I refused delivery of them. 8 other guys also refused delivery so it's just not me. Until we hold the mfgs. to to the fire nothing will change.  What is so wrong that I ask them to it right or as close as possible when it comes to our 3 rail trains? It's just as easy to do it right as it is wrong. BTW I hold both Lionel,MTH and others to the same standard.

I have 5 of the early NYC SD-80's and love them, the only problem that I found with them was loose motors on the mounts!  As far as the fuel tanks I'm sure they can be lowered with some plastistruct pieces added just like zapping the gap on MTH models!!

The best part is now with Legacy control I run all of them in a consist or Mu or(lashup) and not have a problem. With TMCC they would fight each other no matter what I tried!!

I'll get hung for this but there's just people that run trains and then there's people that like to create actual trains running whether 3 rail scale or 2 rail scale and I love looking at what you guys do on the layouts, but I honestly don't see Lionel catering to you guys.

My 2 cents,Doug

Dave,

I haven't removed the end foam pieces yet.  I only took it out of the box to test run the engine and to take photos for this thread.  Then it went back into the box until the holiday which is in December.  I probably won't get a chance to check on this until next week, after my son goes back to school.  I'll email you and post my finding here.

Mike,

Other then roof fan placement, not sure about other exterior differences between the SD80Mac and the SD90Mac but looking at that photo, that CSX engine looks nearly exactly the same as my Lionel Centenial #2000 from almost 12 years ago.

That includes its undersized fuel tank  that most folks complained about back then..

folks should realize most of lionels recent issues are just reruns upgraded with legacy control.

I have sd80 legacy conrail and NYC engines from the last couple years so I went to take a look at them. I bent down and thought wow the tanks really are high. Then I stood up and realized you can't really tell on 95% of my layout because the tracks aren't at eye level. Sure I would prefer the correct tanks but if it hasn't bothered me for this long I won't let it bother me now.
