I recently saw that DesPlaines hobbies had made S scale CB&Q red/grey{I call them red birds} diesel decals and was wondering how they looked and if anyone had used that set- I'd love to see pics if you could please.

I have 2 sets coming my way for some small O scale diesels I'm going to repaint in Q colors...the O scale engines are small and I know the decals will be too, but I have little choice since O scale CB&Q steam and diesel decals are rare as hens dentures.

Thanks Rusty...I was alittle worried about transparency in thw white...looks like it's no problem!

Neat pic- modeled after the mid to late '60s with the engine number set back...early red birds{my term} had the engine numbers under the herald, but sometime later it got pushed back...different shops had different practices. The black birds usually didn't get side white engine numbers at all after they dropped the red/grey scheme...reminds me I still have to button up the white engine numbers on my Aristo U-boat, then she's done.

My son and I are heading over to DesPlaines this afternoon...if I'm lucky they might have a set there...not holding my breath though as we're really going for the adventure and paint/detail parts.

Thanks again for the pic!

Hi Burlington Route!

Welcome to the S scale forum.  We're a bunch of S*heads in here.

Like the Q, eh?  Gotta' admit, the Q sort of grows on a fella'.  I'm currently amassing the parts and working to get the decals printed that I will need to turn an Undec SHS NW2 into a Black Bird with "Burlington" on the side instead of the slogans.

Looking forward to getting started.

Rusty: NICE model.  Thanks for the pic!

Seeing as this is a Q-ball thread... what say we turn it into an impromptu CB&Q S scale Photo Fun thread???

In that vein... here's another S scale pic!  This one is my factory stock SHS SW9 that still needs to pass under the airbrush for its weathering.

Have fun!

Dang it, Andre!  You are an evil man.  You keep asking for pictures and my ego won't let me resist!

One of images I rejected when I reviewed the SD70ACe:

AF vs AM

 A rejected photo for my CB&Q "publicity shot."

The publicity shot that used to appear in my signature line when I still used Photobucket:

LOB 110907

A boxcar, how boring...

CBQ 30232 092213 11

Sometimes, I think I should scrap this Kansas concept and just make it southern Illinois...

Just so you folks know...DesPlaines hobbies does indeed still have S scale CB&Q decals...even though the website doesn't support it as being there-

-Greyback Fs{$8}

-Blackbird diesels{$10}

-Redbird diesels{$8}

Mind you the storefront is now 2 less each of the 3 above mentioned{hehehe}...alas, no steamer decals or those would've went home with me too.

Burlington Route:

Okay... the website is very vague.  I find two S scale CB&Q diesel decal sets they are:

64-74 BURL (CB&Q) E-5 DIESEL (2)

64-87 CB&Q E-5 DIESEL LOCOS (2)

Which is which and what do I order?

Rusty:

Not much would change, would it?  In other words, one of the strengths of NOT modeling a strict prototype setting is that it can be flexible and accommodate more than one theme?  That so... maybe pull you KCB and other "Kansas type" equipment off the layout and re-stock it with stuff that would be seen in southern IL and have at it?  As I recall, southern IL is flat and plains like, similar to portions of Kansas?  OR, are your town names too "Kansas" sounding?

What would you feel you needed to change in order to switch locales?

Don't worry, Andre.  All is safe.  The KGB is pretty much settled in my S scale DNA right now, although the Great Plywood Glacier's so-called scenery is "generic midwest" and it would be a simple matter to change the depot signs.

Sometimes, I don't realize how much CB&Q stuff I've accumulated until I start rooting through the photo archives.

"E units?!"...dang it, now I have to go back!

...the one I have is marked "CB&Q-1 Burlington Route decals

          EMD Greybacks

         EMD FT/FR/F3/F7

...I was gonna repaint my RMT lil Beefs in CB&Q greyback, but now I have to rethunk this if they've got E unit decals!

I'd say toss them an email and ask what "all" they have...I should've done that when I was there but I was skipping out the door as it was just cause I found near O scale CB&Q decals available...{head hung in minor shame- but still smirking}, sorry.

The 64- numbers are ex-Micro Scale sets.  They still come in Micro-Scale packaging.  One is for black nose stripes, the other for red.  These are for the E5's only (of which S Scale has exactly zero.  I counted them twice to be sure...)  The lettering spacing is wider, nose stripes and heralds are all designed for that wonderful slant nose.

When Micro-Scale first ran them, there wasn't even a E8 available in S, somebody was feeding M-S bad information, (some of the other sets they did we didn't have product to letter either) which is probably why M-S stopped making S Scale decals for general consumption.

The DesPlaines Hobbies decals come in a plain, brown wrapper, er... envelope for your guilty pleasures...

Rusty

Okay, I'm just not finding these decal sets listed at the Des Plaines website under the S scale decals page:

"CB&Q-1 Burlington Route decals

          EMD Greybacks

         EMD FT/FR/F3/F7

Are they actually in stock at the store and not on the website?  What gives?

Rusty:

Understood!  I'm a'feared I am going to need to resort to my KC&G theme from HO days to have more flexibility in S scale for modeling purposes.  However, I would REALLY rather build prototype models.  It's just that the pickin's are sometimes a mite thin right now in S scale.

Come on MTH!!

Andre,

Don't be afraid of ressurecting your KC&G.  A freelance road (particularly as well done as yours) can peacefully co-exist with prototype modeling.  My approach is the opposite, I freelance first, prototype second.

The CB&Q decals should be in stock, Ron's website isn't the most friendly in the world.

There's also CB&Q-2 and CB&Q-3, one for Redbirds, the other for Blackbirds, just now I don't remember which is which.  I can check when I get home.

Hold your fire until this weekend, Ron's having a sale this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Nov 11-13.  20% off in general.  Pretty sure it applies to phone orders, too.

They're there...the gentleman behind the back counter said "we prettymuch always have these", meaning they stock/restock them.

desplaines decals 001

They're real and they had a small tub full of them....find they're email under contact us and shoot them an inquirey.

Rusty, they switched to white envelopes now...frankly, I wouldn't care if they were pink...now we need steamer decals!

Rusty:

Thanks for the kind words on the KC&G.  I know, it makes good modeling SENSE to revive it and use it as needed... but dang it... it sure makes me get warm fuzzies to look at a prototype model I've created.

Now, having said that, and along the same line, here's a bit of a quandary that I've mulled over...  oh... never mind.  Me going on about the KC&G belongs in my KC Lines thread, instead of me further hi-jacking this CB&Q thread.

BTW Rusty:  I happen to LIKE that "boring boxcar" pic!  I hope to have some of that type of Q box on the ol' layout "one of these days".  I saw that scheme by the scores/hundreds back when I lived in North Kansas City (from about 1962-1969).  Many of them weathered so heavily so quickly they looked like boxcar red cars.

Burlington Route:

Thanks for the pictures and additional information.  I will need to give Des Plaines Hobbies a call.  I really, REALLY want a "Burlington" Blackbird/Grayback (whatever it's called).

Andre- No problem, that's what we're here for...especially for a fellow CB&Q enthusiast of any scale.

"Blackbirds" were the black/grey scheme, the red/grey scheme never had an official name - I just call them redbirds to go along with the real blackbird name..it's wrong to the rest of the world, except for me....me, the same guy who wants to paint a GG-1 in either of those color schemes since my home town did have the Aurora/Elgin Electrics running thru it eons ago...why not the Q too?...and yes, the color of my modeling world is china red- no cascade green anywhere{alright, the one lionel gondola, but that's it!}
