I'm using ballast as gravel and coal on the ground. Should i get rubber or nut shell? What is the difference when glueing it down?

Anyone have a opinion
I have only used ballast for my track from Scenic Express and glued it using Elmers glue and water in about a 50% ratio. Never used rubber or nut shell. Good luck with your project.
I'm also at the point on deciding what ballast to use with my Lionel Fastrack. I just got the Scenic Express ballast sampler and I leaning towards the #16 natural gray.
Isn't Woodland Scenics nut shell?

That's what I always thought. Our whole layout scenery and ballast is done with Woodland Scenics products.
I have used roofing granules. I had a large amount of track to ballast and that was the most economical way of doing it. If you can find a supply source near you so you can pick a bucket up, it is a great choice.

I have posted many, many, many times on how to conserve ballast, and any other "expensive" scenery materials. Simply use dried, CHEAP, sandbox sand, and then apply a very thin layer of your ballast, cinders, etc., over the sand. Our whole layout is done that way.
Hot Water, I had read your post a couple of weeks ago and thought what a great idea, but I had read it too late for my two layouts that I have completed. If ever there is a third, I will heed that advice.

I'll be ballasting my layout with Brennan's Better Ballast (brennansmodelrr.com) I have 25 lbs. of it on hand for starters, and plan on ordering more, along with some of his ground cover. He's a great guy to deal with. I also got an autographed copy of his book on scenery. Makes for great reading and has some awesome pictures and ideas for scenery.
