Lionel #38 Motor Maintenance

Have a #38 that needs cleaning. It arcs by the commutator/frame. Seems to be full of old oil and gunk. What would be the best cleaner to use that won't damage the old commutator? What should be used after for lubrication? This is the first early Lionel motor I have. I don't want to mess it up.
