Boxes For Menards Non-Boxed Items

Stop at your local USPS and grab some flat rate shipping boxes …..they’re free,…as long as you don’t get greedy, they won’t raise an eyebrow,….

@harmonyards - Appreciate the reply but I want to place only one car in each box. If I'm reading the USPS website correctly, they are too big for only one.

I know this topic has come up with loose Postwar items and a lot of folks use Uline boxes for them. They offer various sizes so something should work. That is the benefit of ordering Menards items online vs in store. It certainly makes it easier for stacking.

USPS has sizes available on-line you won't find in your local PO. Look at the "shoe box" size on their web site. They will also ship, for free, a 10 pack of them. I find they are perfect for shipping freight cars.

Find someone close to you that had bought a bunch of the Menard's cars and get the boxes.  I know I tossed a huge pile of them not long ago, and I keep a bunch around as convenient shipping boxes.  Obviously, trying to ship them would probably be cost prohibitive.

I’m dealing with the same issue as @paulp575. Many good ideas here but I believe we are both looking to keep the clamshells too so some ideas are too small. I’m doing @gunrunnerjohn idea and I’m picking them up at York from a friend for free. I can use more if anyone is heading to York and your looking to clear some space.

I suggest you call a place called Clearbags. They sell all sizes of clear plastic boxes that would be berfect for one freight car or what ever.

I guess I would need more details about your Menards items as to why the BCW boxes wouldn't work.  They're the only boxes I use for the majority of my box-less fleet...PW, kit-built, modern. 

The fact that fewer BCW card boxes cover most of my needs is an advantage...IMHO.  It makes stacking on shelves more consistent, easy.  Frankly, the one-size-fits-all idea I see as an advantage when looking for consistent shelf storage.  Likewise, their absence of other product decoration/information (basically all white) on the boxes provides better shelf storage appearance...you know, that Sheldon/Monk 'thing'?

Our LHS games department carries the BCW card boxes from time-to-time in various sizes.  They're far sturdier that the 'flap' styles of boxes, and still a good value for the price.  Again...IMHO. 

They work for me, anyway.  Yet, TEHO.

Looks like ULine is going to be the best solution.

I can buy one of their box sizes and it will fit all my unboxed items. Some will just need more protection/packing inside. Only problem is they ship in lots of 25 so I guess I'll have a "rest of my lifetime" supply.

Pitch the clam shells and wrap the cars in moving paper. Store many in one moving or liquor box. This would be a space/money saving option until you get a layout setup.

The clam shells are good for transporting one car per box. That’s not what your doing though.
