As was pointed out before the current batch of Legacy systems had either a defective component, was unable to get the correct component, or that the Chinese builder made a substitution that was not acceptable.

Lionel is in the process of obtaining the correct, albeit obsolete part, so they can rebuild the units and ship them out. They may already be on the water, who knows.

The hardware in the CAB1L system is the basis for the upgraded hardware platform planned for future Legacy #990/993 systems. It is expected that the components will be available for at least 10 years.

It is also expected for Lionel to be able to build the systems much more efficiently than they can the current design.

I'm going to test the range today to see what the upper limits might be. I have only gone about 35 feet way from my layout currently. I'm going continue moving further and further from the layout until I lose contact. Since there are no lights on the CAB1L I'll just keep pressing the whistle button until the whistle stops responding.

I think it's probably not a good idea to state as fact an increase in range is part of the wait of the 990 systems.

I really hope that they don't 'upgrade' the CAB-2 display hardware to be the same as used in the CAB-1L.

35 feet?

I can go over fifty feet at the club and up to the second floor with my CAB2

The electronic components in the current Legacy #990/993 are obsolete and no longer available. That is the sole reason for the delay in shipping the products. They are in the process of trying to find the components so they can fix the issue and ship the systems.

In 2015 Legacy 990/993 systems will have their hardware upgraded based on the components in the CAB1L!! That is a fact. I do not know if it affects the display in any way.

Walked out side the house and it seems that the range is about 100 feet. I did notice that if I put the remote behind the metal in our storm door that the signal was blocked. Otherwise it seems to have a improved range.

Hi Trainman9. My desire that the CAB-2 display electronics are not 'upgraded' to those of the CAB-1L are purely due to the CAB-1L not having a display.

In a direct conversation with Mike Regan, in NC prior to the red carpet event, as he was in the process of trying to secure the purchase of the replacement components to resolve the issues with the current batch of Legacy products.

I was told and I quote, "the current Legacy system is too difficult to produce. The existing components are obsolete and it is too difficult to produce the product in it's present form. We will be using the new hardware platform in the current CAB1L as the basis for the upgraded Legacy #990/993 system to be released in 2015."
