I purchased a 1953 736 at the Big E show a few weeks back. After about 2 minutes of running it started smoking great. After a total of about 20 minutes of run time it is still smoking more than any smoke pill ever did in my other steamers. The inside of the stack has some real fine white reside, not quite like the pills leave. I haven't disassembled anything yet to look into whether or not the smoke unit was modified and I'd prefer not to.

So, my question is, can the original smoke unit use liquid smoke and if so, is doing so, OK?

YES fluid works, don't change anything if it's working. A few drops is usually enough.
