Can I turn cruise off?

Did you purchase the Cruise Commander direct from Electric Railroad? If so, I would suggest that you contact Ken at ERR, and see what he has to suggest. Sounds like it was not wired correctly. If you purchased the Cruise Commander from a dealer, best to call that deal back.

You indicated that you swapped out the boards from other engines, assuming that you had no issues with the other engines, leads me to believe that perhaps the issue is in the wiring.

I had a similar problem with a new Lionel. With TMCC it would barely move around the track (at any speed setting) except every so ofter it acted as if it might correct itself...but never did. With conventional mode, it would move smoothly but at a much lower speed, only. 

Try disconnecting the tach feedback at the motor....on mine, it was a small white plug, attached at the motor itself. Then see if it runs correctly in conventional mode. If so, it could be a back tach feedback from the motor. For $26+shipping, I replaced the motor (which includes the sensor for the tach) and problem solved.

Ed,  You can always lower the voltage to the track to 12V so the run away engine is not so bad.  Sounds like the tach motor flywheel is loose or the sensor is bad.  You can always go back to a DCDR and loose cruise while keeping the same motor.  Or else your going to need to find a tach motor to replace the bad one.   G

   It's probably your cruise board that is bad. Finding K-Line parts is getting tough. If you run Tmcc I would suggest installing a ERR Cruise "M" board.  Doing this will eliminate the motor sensor and the motor board and you will probably never need to replace the "M".

This is all K-line stock equipment, nothing new added. Right now there is nothing in this thing to operate cruise except the board(s). Motors are swapped now with motors from a K-line trainmaster so there is not a tach strip, the 3 strand wire is gone. I have yanked everything possible that can show it has cruise. So can I just tell this thing that it does not have cruise?  or maybe 2 speeds is not a cruise issue? Other engines have a switch to turn it off, so there has to be a way.

Its possible you have a bad radio board. Try swapping with a good known good one. What are you using for a motor board.

ED,  The motor driver is the cruise board.  By pulling motors and the tach reader the motor driver board no longer has a speed input and thinks the motors are not turning so it dials up full voltage.  You need swap the K-Line Cruise motor driver for the normal DCDR.  That way the speed input from R2LC can be followed.  I have some spare K-Line DCDR (same as Lionel's) if you need one.  E-mail is in my profile.  G
