Anyone know what acid is used to make plastic train cars change to white and not damage the lettering

I've never even heard of it.
You may want to add "etch" to your search terms if what you've used isn't helping. They chemically change a surface and acids are sometimes involved.
It is possible to chemically leach certain dyes from plastic, alter them chemically or even chemically process some paint dyes to obtain a different color. This was a major issue before the internet and the availability of better references; the TCA undertook a veritable crusade in the early 80s to root out a few unscruplous individuals and eventually even created a book and other resources to help spot all manner of alterations, outright fakes and unmarked reproductions.
With that said, it is probably not the best idea to openly post how to chemically create fake "rare" variations that may dupe unsuspecting hobbyists and collectors... or ask about it on one's first forum post.
Not trying to create a fake, i bought a fake barrel car that was done and it looks like crap and wanted to see if i could make it look decent, I’m not someone looking to create fakes
You, obviously, think the car is worth some effort, why not just paint it and add some decals.
