Certainly the most bang for the buck (no, not an ad for Walter )

Not very likely.  Williams seems to do pretty well for dealers these days.  There are still a whole lot of folks who enjoy affordable conventional models.

Speaking of Williams dealers, at one time Micro-Mark carried a great selection of Williams trains, usually good prices. At this time of year they also would have a free shipping offer. I just checked their site and they show only one Williams item available, the Chessie N5C caboose. Looks like they may have gotten out of the WBB train business.

Toy train dealers come and go (with more presumably going than coming these days), so I wouldn't read too much into the Micro-Mark situation.  I imagine that at some future date, this segment of the hobby will reach a point where the majority of sales will be direct-to-consumer from the manufacturers.  Guess who the losers will be then!  But we are making our own beds, so we might just as well get comfortable.

The reason they are selling so low is because they must want to make room for newer items, the GP-38's by WBB might be over a year old & never run, I think that Bachmann quit making new GP-38's.

Something that I ran into down here in southeast Florida, a hobby shop owner told me he won't be carrying any more Williams as it don't sell once people see the Williams box, Lionel trains sell but not Williams.

I'm the opposite.  I get WBB because I know more than likely it WILLRUN once I open the box.....

These things don't often sell themselves, no matter what the brand.  A good salesman who takes the time to work with his customers is the key.  Yes, Lionel has the advantage of the long-standing name, but when it comes to durability, variety, features, and cost, the various competitors certainly take a back seat to nobody.
