Is there a way to run my engines upside down in the cradle so I can clean wheels & pick-up rollers? Doing it a little at a time is getting old. I have seen this on forum, but can't find it. Tom
It depends on the engine. Run them in conventional using a transformer with a variable output. Connect one side to the center pickup roller and the other to the frame or some ground point ( this depends on the engine ). Be VERY CAREFUL with steam engines, on some the valve gear was not ment to operate properly up-side down and will bind.
I run the diesels upside down all the time, just turn the volume down on the sound if it bothers you. I just clip my test transformer to the frame and the center pickup.
I agree with the comment about steamers, some of them will cause issues running upside down.
Thanks for the info, good to know about the risks of operating steam engines upside down. Sounds like I may build a stand that will hold them suspended right-side-up, with a mirror underneath them for cleaning the wheels.
