Although the K-Line Legacy site is still undergoing reconstruction, if memory serves me correctly, the original list price on the three scale steamers that K-Line brought out in 2003 or therabouts were fairly close to each other were they not?

Specifically the K4, the Mikado, and the Berkshire. Perhaps someone has the old catalogs and can post the listed prices (Not blow-out pricing).

Fast forwarded to this year when Lionel reintroduces these handsome models updated with Legacy and other modern features. Lionel's prices are

K4          $899

Mikado        $899

Berkshire    $1249

The K4 WITH Whistle steam is the same price as the Mikado without.  OK,  the K4 is 'only' a 4-6-2 while the Mike is a 2-8-2. Same total number of wheels but has more drivers. Not a big deal.

Now we have the Berkshire WITHOUT the whistle steam and as a 2-8-4, it only has 2 more wheels than its 'lesser' brethren and is just 2" longer with 6 wheel tender trucks.

Applying normal logic from a layman's viewpoint, how can Lionel justify such a large increase in pricing for an only slightly larger locomotive? At retail $350 - 30% more?

Pardon me if this was covered in one of the numerous and highly informative recent Berkshire threads but I figured this might offer a more concise and specific topic of opinions...

I believe the cost of all three locos with TMCC, Cruise, Etc when they were last offered in 2005 were indeed $899 each. When some of the items were announced the retail was a bit lower, but they seemed to end up around the $899 mark if I remember correctly. The models that only had signal sounds were priced a good deal lower.

K-Line engines were deeply discounted. Early adopters paid the price as a few months after release they could be found at many sources for about half list. No problems finding scale Mikes with TMCC for under 400 bucks back then. I paid 400 bucks for my scale Hudson new and Mikes could be had for around $375. New with TMCC.

Berkshire $849.95 with TMCC (Lima Demonstrator Only)

Thanks Don. I vaguely remember this.

As we can see, the Berk was the SAME price as the others.  Why not so today?

I remember getting my conventional scale Mike from Trainworld for $219.   The experience taught me to always have a few bucks aside for these types of deals.

I paid around $400 each for my three Berkshires (two of them Lima Demos) and way less for the Pacific's and Mikados. Didn't pay much for my 0-6-0 either. You could pick and choose then. They were great days for buyers. I still have two extra cruise control kits for Mikados and even a extra Pennsy 0-6-0 tender shell brand new. All kinds of thing were available at the end of K-line. Miss it. Don

Don,  that video is WONDERFUL!  Several years ago when I first discovered this Forum I saw it watched it several times. It has such an overall appealing feel and is beautifully filmed. Didn't know at the time that you were a 'pro' but it shows as does your love of the trains and conveying that to us. The music, the slow pans, and the rain are terrific.

I've enjoyed watching it more than some of the 'famous' (toy) train videos...
