I have just completed laying the last piece of track.  I have two large loops that are not connected.  The outside loop has been completed for a while and I have been operating under DCS control powered by a z4000.   The outside loop runs from the z4000 through the fixed voltage track 1 circuit on the DCS.  I just wired the inside loop fron the track 2 side of the z4000 and through the fixed voltage track 2 circuit on the TIU.  I powered up loop two to 18 volts on the z4000 the outside loop also powered up to 18 volts.  Shouldnt the loops be independent?  Does the TIU automatically cross them and power them both?

Yes, the are. If powering up one loop also powers up the other, then most likely you have an unintended connection between the center rails on the two loops.

Does the TIU automatically cross them and power them both?

No, it should not.

MR UP,

You definitely have some wiring set up incorrectly, and as I keep advising all new DCS runners, purchase Barry's great instructional book and the OGR Video Guide to DCS also, before constructing a DCS/Legacy layout, it saves a lot of hands on learning and frustration.  I only wish Barry had written his book when the DCS 1st hit the market,

I know my long distance telephone bills between Barry's place and mine were extensive back in that era. He helped me get started when there was no book available, IMO he deserves every dime he makes from his technical writing.  I owe him big time for helping me get started with my early DCS layouts, got to tell ya it was a real trip with the first TIU & AIU, I maybe a little bit of a made man, because of the early equipment.

Further when Marty F came up with the magic light technology, it made everything a lot less frustrating with the initial DCS equipment, these men really know what they are doing, when they give advise use it, I have never known them to be incorrect.
