Good evening, I have been running my MTH Imperial Pennsy K4s ( MTH # 30-1743-1)

This engine is a Proto Sound 3.0

I am running the engine and my layout with (1) MTH Z4000 and the MTH DCS System with a handheld remote.

The engine stopped dead on the track for no apparent reason.

My first thought was the drawbar came loose from the tender.

Removing the engine and tender from the track I checked the connection of the drawbar at the tender and visually looked at the draw bar connection on the engine end. Both connections appear to be seated properly .

Put the engine back on the track and powered everything back up. When you power up this particular engine I get the signal on the remote screen that this "engine is not on track".

Just to make sure that I don't have something else going on with my DCS system, I tried my other MTH engines that are on the layout and they all response to commands from the remote.                               With this I feel sure the problem is within this particular engine.

I removed the engine from the layout again and separated the tender and engine.

I removed the engine shell and looked around under the shell. I visually did not see anything that maybe an issue, pinched wires or loose connections etc.

With the engine shell removed I put the engine back on the track and removed the wire nuts from the larger black and red wires. Looking at the route of the red wires these wires are coming up from the pickup rollers on the underside of the engine.

Using a volt meter I have the same power value that is shown on the Z4000 volt readout which is 17 volts. With this I know I am getting power from the pickup rollers.

Looked under the tender shell and again visually did not see anything that may be an issue.

I put the tender back on the track and connected the drawbar from the engine  to the tender. I began just wiggling wires around and all of the sudden the engine sounds on the tender came on along with the fire box light.

Tried to start the engine with the remote but the engine will not start up, but I don't get the signal on the remote that the "engine is not on track"

I shut everything  down, Z4000, TIU Power and Remote and then re powered everything back up to 17 volts.

Now when I go to startup the engine again I get the signal that the "engine is not on track"

Tried moving the wires around but had no luck getting the sounds or anything else to come on

Any thoughts before I send this engine out to my repair person ?

Thanks in advance

Sorry I don't have an answer but I have a similar problem with a N&W class J proto 2 locomotive which has not been run in a long while.  I suspect that the battery might be dead and need to check that before anything else.  I changed the batteries in my hand held controller because it would not hold a command and kept dropping out.  The engine sits on the track and the headlight comes on so I know it's getting track power.  Before I changed those batteries I was getting an engine not on track message.  I tried adding a new engine in the system control but that didn't work either.  I have had no experience with batteries going dead in proto 3 engines.  What do they do when that happens?

PS-3 does not have batteries.

I suspect that the tender board may have gone bad.  Hard to say until tested by a tech with PS-3 test set.  Since you have power at the wire nuts in the tender shell, the tender board should have started up and made sound.  The Tender board is the brains.   Is the 6 plug connector and the larger one fully seated in the tender board?  G

Good morning Greg, I removed the tender shell this morning and checked the 6 pin connector on the tender  board and it is fully engaged in the socket.

I also removed the two wire nuts and checked the voltage and at the time I had 18 volts reading on the Z4000 readout. Using a volt meter I was reading 17.6 volts on these two wires.

With this it's safe to say there is track power back in the tender wiring.

Visually looked at the circuit board in the tender but did not see anything obvious.

As you mentioned it very well could be a board failure.

Thanks for your advice.

Also thanks SPMAN for your response

Merry Christmas !!!!!

Whoops sorry about that George  I don't know why I was thinking Greg !!!

Going to wait for about an hour and call the repair person I use and get it scheduled in for repair.

I have another K4 that had a motor failure  some time ago so I will take them both in and get them repaired.

Passenger service will be handed over to the L1 engines for my Christmas travelers on my layout.

Thanks again !!!!
