It all depends upon whether MTH uses a slave board in the second A unit (like they do with PS-2), or put a second full PS-3 board in the second A. If its the latter then they won't need the tethers because you would program each A unit separately in the DCS remote, and then set them up as a consist (aka Lash-up).

Thank you Stuart:

Given the cost of putting a full PS3 unit in each unit, I guess the answer is the tether lives on. I sure would like to see that thing go away.

I don't own any modern Lionel ABA units - how do they connect when both A units are powered?

Since I am firmly on my soap box, I would add that including a smoke unit in the B units would be nice as I don't like the look of my two A's smoking away while the middle unit has kicked the habit (so to speak).

Stepping down now...

With powered Lionel units, each unit is recognized as an engine. Then placed in an MU with TMCC or Legacy. I might add that even non-power units with smoke and lights are setup the same way to allow features such as smoke and lights to properly function for the entire MU(train).

No tethers needed.
Hi Paul,

The short answer is we're not sure yet. Ive heard conflicting responses from MTH on this question. In HO, each engine gets a full PS3 board. That includes B-units which are powered with operating remote couplers and sound (and smoke on the PA's). Personally, I would love to see MTH market the O-gauge diesel sets in the same fashion as the HO sets. They offer an A-B powered set, a separate powered A-unit, and a separate powered B-unit. We don't really need that much pulling power in O, but I love the effect of sound, smoke, and lights on every unit in the consist.
