It sounds like using the Fastrack 22.5 deg. crossover with 072 switches which have a 22.5 deg. turnout will work together to give you what you're looking for. The track spacing should definitely be closer than what you get using 060's. I use Fastrack also. I don't like the noise and the plastic roadbed, but I love their switches. On my next layout I want more real looking track and I'd love to use MTH Scaletrax but their switches are too probematic for me. Same thing applies to Atlas products. I'll likely go the Gargraves/Ross route even though I don't like their hollow rail that is unrealistically tall and ties that are way too big.

Avoiding an "s curve" using O-72 turnouts.

Here is a design I have used on my layout to avoid an "s curve".  The design uses Realtrax O-72 turnouts and O-72 curves throughout. This allows me to operate my scale size locomotives on my mainline using all O-72 curves. This same design could be used with Lionel and Atlas track components.
