I think someone on here actually bought another front truck for their engine, and attached a coupler to that, so that it wouldn't alter the engine. I don't remember how exactly.
I think OGR magazine had a detailed article on this a few years ago, with two methods to mount a front coupler by two different authors. I think one of the authors was David of Dearborn. Maybe someone else can track down the details of where to find that info.

I recall that one of the mods for a postwar steam loco involved fabricating a strip of metal bar to wrap around the underside of the cowcatcher, so a front coupler could be mounted without major modification to the loco.
It was David Smith. His way was very simple. Maybe he will join in here later.
