I vacationed in Southwest Colorado doing  a driving tour. I had the good fortune of riding the Durango Silverton narrow gauge railroad Sunday 09/14.

Perfect day, blue sky, few clouds temp approx. 75. The steam engine sounded great, especially in the mountains. The scenery is beautiful especially along the river. When the train winds around the narrow mountains the drop is straight down the view is really great.

Number 480 pulled the train, about half hour into the ride the train suddenly stopped. We could see the conductor and several train crew people walking the tracks looking for something. We learned a cotter pin fell from the pin that hold the drive rod. The cotter pin, nut and washer was missing. Parts was driven from Durango shop to cross road near the train. Repair was made and we were on our way with only a short delay.

Another couple went with my wife and I, they were not familiar with trains especially steam engines. They later told us that was the highlight of their trip. I am posting a few of the photos.

I've only ridden the D&S once and hope to go again soon.  We think we might stay in Silverton one or two nights.  It is a great ride!

Sunday I rode the Georgetown Loop Railroad with Westside Shay #9 doing the honors.  This was my second trip there this year.

In less than two weeks I'll be riding the Cass Scenic again and can't wait!  Even with living in Colorado Cass is still my favorite!

Used to ride them both with regularity, but my favorite was always Cumbres and Toltec, since they were not quite as uptight about things in general and railfans in particular.  Durango is one of the world's neatest towns, and a night in the Strater is not to be missed.  D&S equipment and scenery are superior if you are in to authoritarian structure.

thread, SW Colorado was beautiful this year.  Too bad I had to rush through it.

When we pulled in to Silverton at the depot, there was a guy operating a drone with a GoPro camera mounted taking video of the train. Did you see it?

Nice photos, Bob.  Been a number of years since I rode the line and some 40 years since I first rode it.  But, over the years, it really hasn't changed in character and certainly the scenery has never been anything but spectacular.  I'm glad that you enjoyed yourselves and look forward to returning there some day before the end of my time.
