I recently had to pack up my 0-6-0 Penn. switcher for service. Using the original Lionel box & styrene insert I found that the engine and tender would not fit into the insert. Basically it would fit partially in but not enough to put the cover on.

This has never happened to me. The box was stored in a heated room. No dampness. Is it possible that Styrene can expand over the years?

I was able to take my utility knife and carve out about and 1/8  of an inch certain areas to get the engine and tender inserted properly.

Would appreciate and thoughts on what possibly could have caused this.
