You will be very happy with the upgrade, I've done a number of them. You'll have no more Odyssey "hop" and you also get 100 speed steps. The module you will want is the Cruise Commander M, and it's a pretty simple installation.
The only wrinkle with the Odyssey installation is some wire patching for the power and motor connection. I cheated since I have the tool and slid the pins out of the 6 pin connector and into the 4 pin connector so I had no splices.
The performance is well worth the upgrade.

That's why both of the steamers I had with Odyssey I now have a Cruise Commander M in them. I get the jumps with one diesel that I just got running from parts, if I keep it, it gets the CCM as well.
The good news is that the Legacy Odyssey II is great, no reason to replace that version!

John is this a new upgrade ?
Or should I go ahead and get the commander update, just asking
thanks
Ken
No, Odyssey II is only available on Legacy locomotives, the ERR Cruise Commander M is your only upgrade option for the cruise on that one.
Gotcha, ok for my last question, there are two different commander upgrades to buy for wireless steamers, MB-036/089. Or MB-10D does it matter which one I buy? This is going into the first odyssey NYC Mikado
thank many,
ken
It does matter, that's a question for ERR. Call them during business hours (CA time) and they'll certainly assist you. My conversions so far have been wired tethers, so I'm not sure which of those kits to recommend. Might as well get it from the horse's mouth in any case.
I note in the instructions for the CCM.
Note: If you are installing a Cruise Commander M into a
steam engine with a wireless tether, you will need an extra cable.
Call Electric RR Company, 408-454-4127
Thanks John, will call them, and will let you know the outcome too.
ken
Great, I'm sure it's the boards in your locomotive that determine which cable you need.
Ken
You really don't have to worry what part number you have on the motherboard. That was when you needed a external 5v power supply for the I.R tether The new cruise for wireless tether has a 5v source. The extra cable is no longer needed. Check our web for discounted prices on ERR.
Bill
Thanks for the reply Bill, is there a separate order number for the wireless tether over the normal cruise commander? If so, are there some new instructions for it?
John
Nothing special, in fact its easier, it installs just like the cruise M but you still have to order Cruise M for wireless tether. The hard copy order form does not ask for MB part number
Bill
Thanks Bill, good info to know.
What is the difference in the four versions I see on ERR?
Cruise Commander M Kit - Generic modular TMCC locos | 84.95
Cruise Commander M Kit - DIESEL Odysseytm locos | 89.95
Cruise Commander M Kit for MB-036 / 089 - Steamer kit for wireless tether | 89.95
Cruise Commander M Kit for MB-10D - Steamer kit for wireless tether | 89.95 |
I am with John on this question, what is the difference between the two tether upgrades, and I cannot open your web site with a ipad
When you add cruise to wireless tether equipped engine, the extra cable provided 5v dc for the IR tether. The MB 036 / 0B9 and MB-10D are the last three numbers of the motherboards, 691-PCB1-036, 691-PCB1-0B9. The 089 is a miss print. 610-PCB1-10D.
The wireless tether cruise M is updated to provide the 5v dc. No more using the additional wire.
Bill
Thanks for the explanation on the 2 wireless kits Boxcar Bill, I never dug into that one to figure it out.
Jim
So, if I read this right, now there are three kits?
One generic one, one for Odyssey I, and one for wireless tether? Is that correct? What's added to the Odyssey I kit over the generic one?
Jon, while you're updating the site, can you update the CCM documentation as well?
Will give results after the install
Thx
Ken
Sounds right, I was hoping we'd get a definitive answer on the kits and what they fit.
