For those of you with FDM printers out there, what do you do about that last few feet of filament on the spool? My printer has a habit of forgetting to stop when it runs out of filament. This wastes more filament than just throwing away the end of the spool but I feel like there's got to be a better way.

We fused copper wire together in the wire mill I worked at that made the wiring harnesses in vehicles. It was done with resistance welding. I tried using a soft flame lighter the other day to fuse two ends of PLA together. It worked but they were crooked. That made a headache but has anybody ever seen anything that can do this straight and reliably?

I have an MK3 which alerts me when running out of filament, it lets me change the spool and will restart where it left off, works great.

Also have a Prusa Mini and tried the same procedure which it did, was able to change spools while in a print job but when it restarted did not stick well and produced spaghetti, luckily was near the end of the print but not so lucky I lost the print and about 3 1/2 hours of printing.  I will try this again with some test parts.

I've changed firmware a few times on my printer to try to get it to hang tight when it runs out of filament but it just hasn't worked out. I use a few plugins to help me figure out if I have enough filament on a spool to finish a job and that helps me be pretty efficient in getting the most from a spool. It would be handy to just merge the end of one spool to another though.
