Great Idea.  Looks nice.

Use a sluethe smoke unit in the ground and use MegaSteam fireplace scent and you'll be all set. Very nice scene.

If you put some fine mesh screen in there formed it to the land contour and painted it green to match the smoke would collect under it and waft out in different places like a real forest fire.
Or you could get out the blow torch for that special realism
