I received a new Lionel Legacy GP-35 a few days ago. Reading the owners manual, I can not find any reference to the failures indicated by the flashing cab light? Can it be that Lionel has discontinued that feature. I certainly hope so, every Legacy engine I own with the flashing cab light feature has gone back to Lionel (at least once) for smoke unit repair.

That sounds odd. On both of my Legacy GP35s, the cab light codes are explained on page 30.
If they did away with the diagnostics but not the problem smoke unit motors, that wouldn't be a good thing!
I have never required service on an MTH smoke unit.
I have 5 legacy steamers all but one have had smoke units repaired or replaced. One of them twice.
Why can`t Lionel get this right?
I've fixed plenty of MTH smoke units, they're not immune to issues. I will say the Lionel fan motor issue has been a significant problem for several years, I'm hoping they're going to change suppliers soon.
But I bet you fixed the MTH issues because of wear and tear of age, or no smoke fluid. Not out of the box failures of smoke. G
This is true, I can't argue that the MTH smoke units recently have had a much better track record than Legacy smoke units.
