Thanks! Here is the big news from the GE press release.
GE’s innovative engine technology reduces emissions without the use of costly fuel additives, like the existing emissions-reducing additive Urea. Fuel additives are an impractical option for trains because their use would require an extensive network of refueling stations.

That lays down the gauntlet for every other locomotive manufacturer.
The Humpback!

Oh, I wouldn't count out Caterpillar, and THEIR Engineers, just yet.

Looks like another demo scheme I'll need!!
Of course the EPA will now come up with Tier 5!
Now, does the new GE loose any MPG with the new stuff!
I have heard the EMD 710 could meet T-4 without a major upgrade.
I know the builders really don't care about looks, but from the side, that thing looks hideous.

Looks like a flop-eared bunny ... it's cute!
I was thinking of a humpback whale!
ISn't Urea a liquid for of Bio-Waste that starts with a P?
Another demonstrator I'd like to add to my collection. Hopefully MTH will produce an accurate model.

While it is found in urine, it is a compound that has a number of uses both in our bodies and commercially. You can read more about it here.

I wish that the EPA would have the laws of diminishing returns explained to them. Each time they add another "tier" the amount of improvement is less significant than the previous tier, while the costs of achieving it go up.
I'm surprised that the EPA hasn't thought about the pollution that comes from home heating systems (oil or natural gas). You can't tell me that these systems are already perfectly clean.

Now THAT's just what we all need. The Government sticking their nose into our home furnaces, fire places, garage heaters, and outdoor gas grills!

In the land of Fruits-n-Nuts specifically the Bay Area, they have the un-elected BAAQMD (Bay Area Air Quality Management District), they like to call "Spare the Air days" and ask that you do not BBQ, Mow lawn, drive or use any gas powered equipment, and in the Winter especially on Christmas they will fine you for using a FIREPLACE! Oh Yeah, they have people that drive around looking.
Home heaters and tankless water heaters that are natural gas fired do have standards to meet regarding Carbon Monoxide - I'm talking about ones that are vented to the exterior of home.
The Utility company has raised rates to bring in several million dollars extra that strictly goes towards Cap and trade tax.
Train Related? Yes, BNSF had their fleet of 7700's designated to California because of their emissions standards.
That's nothing new. ATSF 51 on its first trip to LA got a smoke ticket during a turbo lag. ATSF ran the unit out of town at night. We're talking about PA's here!

I don't believe the state of California was even issuing "smoke tickets" back in the 1940s and 1950s. I find your statement hard to believe.
He's not very good at it, then.
The US government has exploded over 300 Nuclear weapons in our atmosphere since the 40's but somehow they feel they have the right to legislate CO2 emissions from our vehicles. I'm pretty sure the two aren't equal...
Kudos to GE for meeting the challenge though. They stand to benefit from these imposed mandates by solving the technical problems. Modern locomotives will just continue to get more and more complex.
