Golden Gate Depot products were mostly what filled my trunk this York. Found some REA head-end cars that were exactly what I needed for my Penn Central passenger train, and then my big buy came on Friday at Vince's Trains in the Orange Hall. He had Golden Gate Depot's 5-car articulated Daylight set brand new in 3-Rail, and when I asked about them he said they were on dealer pricing blowout since it was a mistake order. At roughly $90 per car, which is actually less than what several equivalent K-Line cars have been going for, I had to have them.

So, what is everyone's experiences with these Daylight cars? I will be running them on O-72 until I can build a bigger layout with bigger curves - will the separate sale diaphragms work on those curves or should I wait? And what were the other cars that Golden Gate Depot offered to complete the set? Thanks in advance for any info.

I have the full SP Daylght passenger train set, by Golden Gate Depot. They are absolutely exquisite!  The full set is some 10 or maybe 11 cars, which included the articulated chair car, 3 section articulated diner, single chair cars, combine baggage/chair car, snack/lounge car, and of course observation car. I even ordered an additional articulated chair car (different road number) in order to make the train longer. You will have no problems on 072 and larger curves. There were never any "pullman" sleeping cars in the SP Daylight passenger trains, since they were NOT needed between LA and San Francisco.

You might contact Sunset/3rd Rail and purchase the additional special diaphragm pieces that fit between each articulated car section.

Nick,

The green with red diamond scheme is correct for the Penn Central era. The dark green with yellow lettering is correct for the early 1950's era before the cars were repainted in the brighter green with red diamond with RAILWAY EXPRESS AGENCY spelled out in the diamond and on the top left side of the car.

But who cares. If you like it that is all that matters, isn't it?

I bought the Pullman Green version based on a photo I have of a Penn Central passenger train with one very old and battered REA Reefer that looked like it had not been repainted yet, and did not have the diamond. It is so dirty in fact that I can't honestly tell what road or color it's supposed to be, all I know it is looks dark green under all the grime. Even if incorrect, it is still perfect for my pre-WWII Pullman Green 20th Century Limiteds.
