Here's a pic of a GP-30B. Is it true that only UP and the Pennsy had them? Matt

Pennsy did not have any GP30B units. The only hood units they had were GP9B's.

I have read the GP30B had steam generators. Is that true?
UP was the only road to order GP30B's. At least some had steam generators when delivered to be used as back-up power for mail trains in conjunction with steam generator equipped SDP35's. I doubt if any saw passenger train service.

Not all of them.
Also, there are no dashes in EMD model designations, i.e. between the type and the model number series. For example: F7, E8, GP7, GP9, GP30, SD35, SD45, SD50, etc., etc, etc..
A total of 40 GP30Bs were produced 4/63-7/63 and sold to the Union Pacific of which 8 of them had steam generators.

The Boiler-Equipped GP30B's made a few trips on the Butte Special. The Spokane passenger train might have had them for a few trips also. These units were purchased when the future of passenger service was uncertain and the older E-units were beginning to become long in the tooth. As it turned out, UP had enough E8 and E9 units to handle almost all passenger assignments after the E7's were retired, until Amtrak Day.

What about the GP-39-2? Did EMD make that model as well? Reading Lines had about 20 GP-39-2's.

You mean the GP39-2? Yes, they're EMD's.

Again,,,,,,,there is NO DASH in the EMC/EMD locomotive model designations, between the type of unit, and the series number of unit. Thus, "GP-39-2" was actually GP39-2, no matter what customer purchased them.
