Hi everyone,
I am looking for someone who can supply and install an improved smoke unit in a Lionel 8049-250 Warhorse J 4-8-4. I would prefer a fan unit but even an improved resistor type would be great.
Thanks,

With all of the experience improving smoking locos, isn't there someone who has upped the puffs on a J! Thanks for helping.

Hi Joe,
I do upgrades on most Lionel engines all the time. I just did a puffer unit for a fellow forum member and it came out great. But your J seems to be a different puffer unit then the one I worked on. Is there a resistor inside your unit. Also what year is this engine from
Here's a video of the one I just upgraded

Here's what I did on my Williams J class. I used a standard Lionel 27ohm fan driven smoke unit straight to track power then hot glued it in the boiler. It took less then five minutes to do and I believe it cost 30 dollars..
Hi Liam,
It smokes great but I think I see a big problem there, it looks like the resistor is way way to hot. I see from the video it'slooks like its going to go on fire. I don't think you can hook up a smoke unit straight to track power. Way to many volts.

Alex,
Manual says 71-8049-250 Lionel 600 N&W J. Eng is numbered 600. This is the "warhorse" weathered model equipped with command. I only run it conventionsl. I am sure it has a resistor in the smoke unit but I cannot figure out how to open the unit. It appears to be a one-piece plastic unit with tubing leading out of the top to the cylinders as well as the direct route out of the stack. Do you think you can help?

Hi, I went to Lionel and read the directions I think for your engine. When you run it in command you can adjust the smoke output. It also says that while running in conventional mode the unit will run only on medium smoke output.

Wow I never seen smoke and fire come out of a stack! Rad- Dont think thats gonna last to long though.
Would be nice if someone could post what components you needed in front of the 27Ohm smoke unit if you where going to hook it straight to 18 volt track. That way you could use the micro switch to turn the fan off and on.
Ive seen people drill the mechanical puffer hole out bigger and get good results.
Hi Joe,
If you can post a few photos of the smoke unit maybe I can help you out, I'm quite sure the unit must be all clogged. If you don't want to open it up you can contact
Boxcar Bill, he's a fellow forum member who will be able to help you out and get parts.
Thanks, Alex

Hi Patrick, I emailed Liam right of way yesterday. That unit is getting way to many volts going to it. So emailed me back and said he won't use it until he gets the correct parts for it. I never did a job like this before, but I think you would need a regulator board to regulate the volts going to the smoke unit. I'm sure Boxcar Bill will know

Whats wrong with using it? LOL
The reason i asked my question earlier(same as the Original poster i think), 4 or 5 years ago i put a fan driven unit in this engine in place of the puffer and added an identical microswitch next to the chuff switch so the foot depresses both at the same time.. It smokes too great, but i have to turn it off with the remote after a minute or two. Just never got around to figuring out what to do.Thought maybe put a few diodes in front of it or change the resistor or something. I have little electornic knowledge as far as circuits.
