GUNRUNNERJOHN   I will assume this old RCMC board that lionel took out of BB is still programed for it? that is why I asked if it was possible to fix in case this one goes belly up I would have another to use in place of as we all know once spare parts are gone no way to use as delivered!

Well it really depends on what happened to it.  So the answer is yes, no, or maybe.

The electronics are getting smaller and smaller.  I am entering the phase of attempting some PS-3 diesel board repairs beyond the smoke and light stuff.  Hope to know soon how successful it would be.  Would like to be able to fix PS-3 boards the way PS-2 3V can be repaired.  Unfortunately too much stuff with hidden contact pads.  G

Talked to Angela at Lionel customer service this morning informed me tech found some connectors dislodged and some wires pinched. She said and this is funny tech told her if it "behaves" today will ship today or tomorrow. I asked them to switch eng id# to 40 as that's when issues arise for me and run the wholly you know what out of it. Will assume rough handling last time to me or back to them cause of loose connectors? at least it acted same for them as it was for me so at least I know for sure it wasn't my not doing something right! and they are honoring the warranty this time that was good to hear! will report on how it is working on my layout when I get it back in 7-8 days.

update 8-10-16 I'm so bummed out I swear this engine is cursed! poor angela at lionel customer service is bummed as well.  the good the bad boy responds to all cab-2 commands sent. main smoke stacks and whistle smoke work well.

the not so good a black wire is sticking out from under front set of drivers and comes from a hole in underside of boiler and headlight will not light up and the blow down added the 20 drops of fluid and no blow down effect I let it set for awhile powered up thinking it needed time to heat up nope boiler area around that area nice and warm so element is getting warm but cannot feel any air movement or see smoke coming from fluid fill hole.

I swear this bad boy [my name for this engine] has tools within so during return from repair it self destructs itself!

so I have a new RA# and will return to lionel am going to let it sit for a day and let the smoke fluid have time to dry out so no fluid running all over during return transit to Lionel.

thankfully lionel is doing all it can to get this engine corrected am sure they too are wondering why this engine keeps self destructing.

time to do yardwork ahhh retirement can do this with cloud cover today in southwest desert this is a good thing.

bad boy is enroute via ups to NC for 3rd time the shipping box has packaging tape holding corners together its taking a beating hopefully this time all issues fixed and no new ones created.

the blowdown smoke issue might have been my fault? as I added 20 drops of fluid to that smoke unit maybe it wasn't as dried out as I thought and I flooded it as next day it started to work correctly. wish I had superman X-ray vision then could see what's needed prior to filling ha ha.

Try laying a large hammer right beside it while you are waiting on the smoke fluid to settle in. Maybe it will get the hint and straighten up?

in all honesty as upset as I get at times I might use the hammer on it and have $2000 worth of a junk yard scene! LOL

I know the feeling. I haven't had that happen with a train item yet, but there have been other items over the years that I would have certainly liked to have used a large hammer on. Also really glad I am now retired as many of those 'highly hammerable' items were devices used or made by the company I worked for.

all lionel would have to do is make a cutout held down with small magnets (like under the switch control panel) so we can have access to the smoke unit without taking the thing apart.

Good er late evening to all, I received the Bad Boy back today and unboxed it and set it on the track powered it up and oh my all is working with exception I cannot turn headlight on/off so the aux 1 screen lower left of cab-2 there is a on/off feature that turns the classification lights on/off and in aux 2 screen a second set of on/off in middle lower left of cab-2 that turns them off too!

so do I need to use the LSU? or change the on/off keys in aux 1 in lower left to turn headlight on/off?

I'm not totally out of woods as one of the red round valve wheels was laying in box is it a press fit or glued in place? I also have a stray screw from? that was in box my wife saw it and said this can't be good!!

I have no intentions of sending back I'll fix the red valve wheel and put screw back if I see a place for it externally to go into appropriate hole.

they had to replace the boiler front and the pcb with led headlight no mention of the wire hanging out in space so will assume it went someplace inside to?

I'm not sure why parts replaced maybe that lose wire did more damage then just not being connected!

but the Bad Boy now responds to main smoke off low etc whistle smoke and blow down all working and cab-2 to engine commands are sent received and executed so all in all I am pleased.

I thank Lionel and techs for getting repairs completed so this Bad Boy can stay on it's home tracks, but most of all to Angela the lionel service department representative she was always polite and concerned with all past  and present issues and sending emails with the RA# and shipping labels in a timely manner.

AUX 2 button turns off the headlight when tapped.  Aux 2 hold gets the lighting menu.  Below are the menus.  The bottom right menu is the lighting menu.  The AUX2 button here should also turn off the headlight.  The classification / marker lights can be controlled as well using the bottom left (tender) and bottom middle (engine) buttons.  As others have pointed out, I believe the headlight must be on for the marker / classification lights to turn on / off.
