Has anyone used those rubber mats used in horse stalls to deaden noise? I noticed them at Tractor Supply yesterday and they come in either 1/2" or 3/4" in a 4' x 6' sheet. They have a black textured finish on the top side, and are pretty heavy so seems they would lay out well over a bench.

Do you remember the approximate price? I will check out when I am there again. I am doing a new layout

Seems it was about $40 a sheet (4 x 6 )
Having horses I can give you a hint. It seems improbable, but the best way to cut them is with a curved X-acto knife. If you can curl it up to a dome shape it helps. Make sure if you're going to have a rubber smell with them.

Alan - does that 'rubber' smell dissipate with time? Or does it seem to just hang on and on and on? I read someone actually put these down as flooring all the way through their house...hence wondering about the "how much" of a smell is the smell!
I actually have used that very thing. I have a Fastrack layout on a ceramic tile floor and used 6 inch square pieces cut from leftover sections of mats from when I lined our horse's stalls. I put one under each leg, not on the layout itself.
Even used them under the couch to keep it from sliding on the tile. They do help in noise insulation although I also used carpet underlay over the plywood. The end result was a very quiet Fastrack layout.
I used a box cutter to cut the sections. And with the small pieces, there was no smell, plus the fact that they were done several months after lining the stalls.
You can get them at tractor supply for 40 bucks. Hers a link...
