Recently a light bulb went out in the lighted number board harness of my Lionel 38055 Santa Fe Northern. Went to Lionel's parts page to order a replacement but naturally they were all out. I was advised by Lionel staff to order a similar harness with the same rating of 14V 80MA and just splice in the bulbs, which I did, but now the number boards get rather hot in operation and I fear this will eventually soften and ruin the plastic number lens. Does anyone else own this model or one similar and can report how hot the number boards get? It's just strange because both the headlight and cab light remain room temperature in operation. Thanks in advance for any help.

Those are just the part pictures off Lionel's website. The advice I got from them was to cut the bulbs from the incorrect connector and splice them into the original harness. I took extra care to keep the wiring configuration exactly as it was before but they still got very hot.

I'll see if I can get them to just send me the other one in exchange for the incorrect ones they advised me on. I can't stand that $9 shipping charge every time...

Yep, the lower the current rating, the less power it'll dissipate.  Virtually all the power to an incandescent bulb is released as heat, the more power it consumes, the hotter it gets.  Also, a bulb rated at 18 volts and running on 12 volts will run at a lower current (and power dissipation) than the higher rated bulb.  That's the best of the choices so far.
