First off, this is not knocking the new catalog. It was a very good one, and the scale Penn Central stuff made my day

I just really miss that "Premium Sets" section from those early 2000s monster catalogs. Those were always what I looked forward to most. The CP Grain Train, the BN bathtub gondola unit set, every TankTrain set, the big scale passenger trains, all great stuff. Nowadays though I've noticed sets along these lines only come with 3 or 4 cars as opposed to the then common 6 or even 8. Like the new CN piggyback set for instance. I liked it, but only 3 cars??

I'm guessing no one minds because most people just add their own cars to make the full consist. I was always more of a matching set and unit train guy I guess. What say you?

In this year catalog is a premium set (Motor City) which is by far one of the longest train sets Lionel has ever brought out, without any add ons. It's 115" long, which is longer then most of the ones listed above. Only the SP & NS Tanktrain sets are longer.

Photos are deceiving, the Motor City set is around 2' longer then the BN bathtub and the CP grain sets. It is longer then most of the passenger sets, Acela, Alton, Southern  and Florida sets.

I think the Motor City set will be a great set if you have the room, 2' auto cars are going to be something. I believe the couplers on these cars are going to be like the one being used on the Mil. Road S-3 tender.
