Working on a Lionel 38056 M1a.   In conventional mode when the bell button is pushed the engine will stop, and stay stopped as long as the button is held down.  Release the button and the engine resumes it's direction.  Bell sound responds OK.   Doesn't happen with whistle, only bell.  All other functions OK including command.  Tried different transformers/bell combinations - same result.

Any ideas?

Does it stop if you increase the speed (hence higher track voltage)?

Yes.  If I run the engine faster (more AC voltage) it doesn't stop when I sound the bell.  Must be something to do with the bell DC offset affecting low AC voltage.  In command mode the engine is getting 18+/- so it's not affected.

I pulled my M1a off the shelf and it did the exact same thing.  I never run conventional so I never knew that fault existed.

A common scenario is a slow backup to recouple, and you want to sound the bell, and the engine stops when you do so.  Not good.

I'm willing to bet all engines with boards from that time frame exhibit the same fault/anomaly, and there's no fix.

Not so much the bell as the TMCC do not like low voltage.  I did a test on mine an at low voltage it may (not always) stop on its own.  If it does with bell you can raise voltage to move again and at slightly higher voltage bell won't stop engine in reverse.  Remember for these TMCC engine, the motor motion and logic are in engine, and sounds in Tender, sometimes with IR between.  TMCC was really meant for command ops and it is marginalized for conventional operations.  G
