I want to install a inline fuse to protect modern engine electronics using a postwar transformer but not sure what amperage fuse would be sufficient. Any help would be appreciated.

10 amp fast-blow is the most recommended here. The fuse will only protect the transformer and wiring, though. A TVS diode is needed to protect the electronics. If you do a search, you will many threads on the subject.

The best protection I’ve found for a fast breaker is the PSX-AC which you can buy at Charles Ro. Adding a TVS diode will cover it all for protection. It’s important to trip fast so you don’t melt wires inside the cars, engines, etc. And don’t weld wheels to the rails.
