I have a K-line Alco PA ABA set. Both A's are powered, all 3 have smoke. All are tethered together. Smoke units worked fine, but when I set up the lead A with my Cab-L, all 3 units only smoke when running in reverse under TMCC. When I change direction to forward, the fans turn off. I tried toggling the 8 and 9 keys. The lead A is the only programmable unit.

Any ideas?

Hi Bob,
I wish I could help on this issue, but my only Guedes would be to try replacing the receiver board. I think that is toggling off the smoke when you send the direction change signal via the handheld.

But my main reason for replying ( I know it is selfish) is that I am in process of upgrading my K-line Pa-1Aa with only TMCC and Railsounds to having Smoke and electrocouplers.
I would be indebted to you if I could get some photos of the insides of yours showing the location and mounting methods of the smoke units.
The brackets are no longer available and no one seems to have a photo or illustrated parts diagram. Thanks
Sure. Everyone else does. Too many forums and to many Fred, Fred1,Fred2's, etc.

I had to do the same thing today.
Replaced a reciever after rebuilding the smoke unit on my K-line 0-4-0

Ready to tear it apart again and the light bulb went on in my little smoke fogged cranium.

One of the last resorts before swapping parts.
Now if you can remember those photos, I would be much obliged.
Thx

Smoke is not supposed to be direction dependent especially on a TMCC RS4 based engine.  It is either on or off.

So unless K-line did a mod and used a diode of the motor to power smoke it is hard to determine why smoke goes off in reverse.  Unless the direction change is turning the smoke TRIAC off too.  G
