The chuff on those is actuated by a small lever switch.
They tend to get fouled by excess smoke fluid, etc. and can require replacement.
You may still hear a single chuff when the loco first starts moving as the first one is triggered by the internal board but the others are triggered by the switch.
Graz: you are right. There is a first chuff and that is all. I have the cab off, but I am at a loss as to where to look for the switch? Any suggestions where to look (around the smoke unit, perhaps remove the smoke unit) any possibility of a picture of what I am looking for?
The chuff switch usually is activated by high spots on one of the axles. This engine since it has two chuffs per revolution has two high spots on one of the axles either the first or second drive axles.
If you want to give the engine four chuffs per use JD Weld, can't remember the name of the product its not glue but you can mold two additional high spots which would register 4 chuffs per revolution.
