Hi all,

I found this very nice pic of an o scale layout on the web. I've been trying to figure out what they used for the support under the track. It looks like steel but I'm not sure. The size looks like 2"×2". Does anyone have any idea what they used? Thanks for the input in advance! Bob

The track in the photo appears to be GarGraves.  With that in mind, measuring a piece of GarGraves, studying the photo, and doing some interpolation, the tubing is probably 1-1/4" square stock (or 1-1/2" square at the very most).

Due to the sharp corners of the tubing, I would say it is extruded aluminum tubing, as steel tubing would not have sharp corners, it's corners would be rounded.  Also, the color of the tubing has a strong indication of clear anodized aluminum, at least in my eyes.

Looking close at the inside radius of the rolled tubing elbow, we can see an indentation throughout the 90 degree portion, which is indicative of a normal, economical square and rectangular tubing rolling process.

Anyone wishing to duplicate this track support could get in touch with a non-ferrous metal supplier to purchase the tubing, and if the supplier did't offer rolling services and/or pre-rolled elbows, would probably know somewhere to get the tubing rolled.

Thanks for the replies. I will contact a aluminum supplier and see what I can find out. I wonder if I get some square stock if I could bend it on my own. Does anyone have experience in this? Can it be done effectively? Thanks Bob

Without the proper set of rollers, dies, specialized tooling, and experience, your chances of bending it properly by yourself are probably somewhere between zero and not at all.  Sorry to say.
