Hi GUYZ,

I have a Santa Fe Legacy AC6000 that is giving me the dreaded 3 blinking lights.  Did the reset things with the number 0 press and also the factory reset, and still the same no smoke or fan sounds.  I opened it up and replaced the motor with a new motor.  I checked it, with 5 volts of dc and motor is working, before buttoning it back up.  I placed it on my test track which is just conventional, and switched on the smoke switch, heard motor for about a second then the 3 blinking lights again.  Took it to the layout and did a factory reset, fired it up in Legacy mode and it did the same thing, 3 blinking lights.  Does anyone know what my problem could be?  Thanks in advance.

The diagnostics is designed to sense too much power draw from the fan motor. When it does, it shuts down the unit and causes the flashing code.

It" possibly" could the impeller rubbing the back of the housing if its too far on.  I try to leave a little space between the back of the inpellar and the housing, using an index card or fingernail as an unscientific distance.

Of course the impeller too far out will rub the outer part of the housing, but this results in a loud buzz from the impeller blades.

The motor is briefly tested upon each power up of the loco, thats why you heard it for a second. Having said ,that its usually tough to hear when it does so. If the fan is fairly audible you may still have an issue.

I usually put a drop of light oil on the motor output shaft bushing to help.I work it in spinning the impeller with my fingers.

For whatever reason the new motor is drawing too much power. The smoke unit will correct itself without any resets once the problem is resolved.

Some have posted a bad connection at the smoke motor plug causes false shutdowns.

Thanks GUYZ for the responses.  I did do the drop of oil on new motor before putting it together.  I also tested the new motor inside the housing with the low voltage and all was working as should.  But when put to the test on the track got the three lights.  If it worked prior to putting it on the tracks why would it not work when on the tracks?

Apparently one of the issues is the motor draws too much current. You would not know testing it on your own supply, but the limit the engine electronics wants to see is lower. So it shuts down and the three blinks.

Gunrunner John has been replacing the Lionel motors with MFJ motors which apparently don't draw excessive current like the batch (yours included it seems) of problematic Lionel motors. If they fit.

I wonder if you can make one "run in" so to speak. Maybe on the test bench with your power supply, run it for an hour and see if whatever is tight will wear in.

I've had a number of Lionel smoke motors that fail and draw excessive current.  Most were still running, but drawing from 200ma to over half an amp!  I ran one the other day on my bench power supply drawing about 1/2 an amp, I wanted to see if anything would change.  After a couple minutes there was a puff of smoke and motor dead.   I'm surprised it ran that long.
