I upgraded my Cab2 remote to 1.61 today.  The base will not update.  When I hold in the channel select button and reapply power, the center light (yellow) will flash very rapidly then goes to a 6 blink error code.  I'm inclined to think there is an issue with the base and not the module since the remote updated without issue.

The Remote is the only thing you update to 1.61. The Base is to remain at 1.60.

And just to be complete, you do use separate updates from Lionel to update the Base and the Remote when the update requires both to be updated.

I guess I assumed wrong but the title said base to 1.6 so I assumed he knew about the 1.6 Base and 1.61 Cab2 difference.

Base and remote were at 1.52     Remote upgraded to 1.61.  Base will not upgrade to 1.6. or 1.60 if you want to call it that.   I tried it over and over.  I am aware Cab2 remote goes to 1.61 and base gets the 1.6 hence the file names Base and Cab2.   Called Lionel and after checking with someone they said to send it in.

Tried updates via LCS wifi and serial cable.

Ok. It was confusing from what you posted. I thought that was what you meant. Did you try a different module to make the 1.60 Base module? I have had a bad module cause issues.  I hope we didn't upset you but we want to make sure we are understanding so that we can help.

No sorry. It's me. Been a long day with the snow storm and a slew of recent Lionel warranty repairs.  Just frustrated.

Time for a beer and I apologize if I came off like it's that time of the month lmao

I once had a similar circumstance.  I re-wrote the module and it worked the second go round.  Have you tried re-downloading the upgrade file and re-writing the base program to the module?

About 4 times and deleted all files and started fresh every time.

I had that happen updating the Base to 1.60, but the second try after rewriting the module, it worked ok. First time ever for that issue.

I had the same problem about a year and a half ago. Tried to update from 1.5? to the next 1.5? version up, I forget the actual versions? Remote went perfectly, base had to go to Lionel for repair. I have 2 modules, tried them both, plus everything else Lionel told me to try on the phone. The Lionel tech at my LHS even tried to upgrade it and told me the same thing Lionel did, needs to go back to Lionel. On the brighter side, it's been working perfectly since it came back though!!

Trying a different module, reloading the module, trying the one that worked with the remote were some of the things Lionel had me try, didn't work for me. If you have not yet tried any of these things it sure might be worth a try.

I never did see if you tried writing a new black module for the update, it might be the module.

I only have one module but I guess I can purchase a second before a warranty send off and no Lionel trains for 2-3 weeks which saddens me lol.

John I do have a question. Let's say it is the module. Any rhyme or reason as to why the module would update the remote and not the base?  That's what makes me lean towards a base vs module issue.

Usually, that's the case.  However, a bad bit in the module that happened to be in the right state for the remote and not for the base would create this issue.  I mention this as I've build many varied software based products, and I've had that very issue with updates suddenly not working.

If you're at all handy with the soldering iron, you can get a free writable module fairly easily and test that immediately.

Free Black Modules for Legacy

Mine just did the exact same thing!! Upgraded the cab to 1.61 with ZERO issues but the base to 1.60 just gives me a quick flashing yellow for about 5 seconds and then the 6 slow yellow blinks. Tried to rewrite the module but now it says no base present. Looks like it's going back to Lionel.

If you kill power to the base with the module out and power back up it will work in the meantime

Thanks for the reply Sparky!  I tried that and everything else I can think of. The only thing I can get out of the remote is "base not found, scan or retry". The software will connect to the LCS wifi module but it also says "base not found". So, since the laptop/software can't find the base, I can't rewrite the black memory module to  flash back to a previous version. I'm dead in the water completely. I wish there was a way to do a hard reset on the base.

I'm completely stumped!! NEVER DREAMED a software update would kill my base!!

Just pulled the original 1.52 memory module from the Legacy box and tried to flash with it.........same thing........fast flashing yellow for 6 seconds and then goes to the slow 6 yellows. And.....the remote still says "base not found, scan or retry". I give up.......

So frustrating...........been doing software/firmware updates for the last 30 years of my life and have never seen something this difficult.......

It may not have been anything you or the upgrade did to cause this, may have just been a glitch? As I said above, my base had similar problems and had to go back for repair. Mine was one of the delayed ones a couple years ago that had problems a before they finally shipped the batch about a year late. If yours was from the batch, I think there may have been a couple of other folks here that had similar problems from that same batch.

The upgrade process is fairly easy.  Once the modules are made it usually takes less than 2 minutes total.  Obviously in the few cases here there is another issue but even making the modules are not that hard.

I created 2 sets of modules for the LHS and with creating and testing (did the upgrade process for both sets) it took less than 5 minutes for the 2 sets.  Much like John I've done my fair share of upgrades and only had 1 base not take it.  I've had more issues with modules.

Call Lionel and they'll take care of you.

Well, to say the least I was successful in updating both the base and the cab 2 remote to the latest software, first try. I updated the base to v1.60, and the remote to version 1.61. I went slow, followed the legacy system directions, and didn't do it alone! I also would highly recommend the special cable Mike Regan recommends to buy for the upgrade which is built to transfer the special software.

Thanks for all the replies guys!! Talked to Lionel this morning and they were puzzled as well. Sending it in this afternoon. They said about 2 weeks. No biggie........it's just toy trains after all!!

Same with mine as well.  Called Lionel and they seemed a bit confused about it.  Shipped it out last Friday.

Special cable?  I use a serial port or a USB<->Serial adapter and a plain serial cable to update mine.

I had an issue in the past with certain USB to serial adapter(s) but you won't even get to step 1 as it will not recognize the port or your device.

The only thing special about the cable Mike mentions is having the proper drivers for it which helped tremendously in my case.  I got a Gigaware cable from Radio Shack that came with the drivers on a CD.

There was an issue with Prolific cables, something about a counterfeit chip that caused prolific to require different drivers, etc. etc. and FTDI was the cable of choice that just worked. I think they all work now just with the drivers Windows provides or finds. I bought a couple Edgeport, sort of high end, 4 port converters as used on Ebay a few years ago that do the job just fine with no issues.
