Legacy Railsounds Compatability?

Can an early Legacy steam engine with Railsounds 5.5 (Legacy R4LC) communicate with a later tender with Railsounds 6.0? I was under the impression the code for Legacy Railsounds was all the same but am not getting any response when I try to do this. The tender does see serial data since I get no sound when coupled to the engine but do get sounds when uncoupled and it sees no serial data (essentially conventional mode).
