Hi everyone my name is Mike Matysik of Classy Woods LLC.  I'm the guy who makes the train display cases as seen advertised in OGR.

My wife gave me permission to remove a bedroom wall in the basement which will allow for a 11' x 28' layout.  At one time I was going to do S but realized that I'd never be able to run anything modern due to there being nothing modern available in S.   I have been debating between 3 rail O or 2 rail O scale.  There is really no one in my immediate location that I am aware of doing 2 rail O scale so I am turning to you guys for track advice.  I want to buy a 2 rail engine, lay some track and experiment with radiuses etc.  I'd like to run a Big Boy steam locomotive some day and I think you need a 60" radius for that?  11' wide on the layout hopefully would accommodate that.

What is out there for two rail track manufacturers and turnout options?  I'm aware of Atlas, Micro Engineering. M.T.H track  and oscaleturnouts.com.  I do not wish to hand lay the track.  Any feedback welcomed.  The one thing I really don't know is if you can run a 2 rail Big Boy on a 60" radius.  I do like contempary locos and rolling stock too.  I hope I am not pushing the limits at only 11' wide.  Thanks

probably the simplest way to get your feet wet in 2 rail is to buy some lengths of Atlas flex track. the newer style with brown plastic ties. It comes in 40" sections and can be flexed to reasonable radii curves. if you can find some used sections it'll be cheaper.

one trick for curves with the flex track is to stagger the rail joints to provide nice smooth transitions. the rail slides in the ties to allow this. not staggering the rail joints can give you a kink in your curve where the sections join.

your 11' layout width will give you approximately a 66"+ radius if you go full width. enough for almost any rigid wheelbase steam engine, except for maybe a 10 coupled engine.
