A problem I have had is working underneath a layout to install and service wiring. I would suggest installing led bulbs that can be switched on externally. The LED bulbs won't break if yoų bump into them.

I use LED rope lights they are low profile, flexible to go around pop outs and provide a good amount of light. Best decision I've made on my layout.
I saw one layout where a fellow had done just that, the only difference was he used a string of Christmas lights.

I need to do this. A friend of mine did long ago. It is really smart.
I used the LED strips that come on a 5 meter spool. Got the doubles (600 LEDs instead of 300). I ordered the 12 VDC power supply from the same supplier I got the lights from. When I installed them, I put a toggle switch on the layout's fascia at the entrance to the below layout area. They are sticky back, I just peeled off the protective strip on the 'sticky' side and stuck it to the bottom of the layout. That was about 2 years ago and it's still stuck up there. Works great!
I actually got 2 spools and a power supply that would handle both. However one strip was plenty bright and I didn't install the second one. It really helps when you go below to work on something or try to find something stored under there. I think the spools were $7-$9 each and the PS was about the same as one spool.
Did the same thing Dave did, 4 strings. I also added one of the Christmas remotes I had extra to turn them off and on.

LED rope lights are easily available ... and are relatively cheap.
They work nicely under the layout for general illumination. Pay attention to the "color".
These light work well. They should be available in LED by now.
There is a small rocker switch built in to each light.
Have fun with your wiring. Mike CT.
