This tender will work with either of the unstreamlined or steamlined J3s. The crew talk won't match but otherwise all the sounds will respond. The sounds are not spectacularly better. The standard tender has two speakers and the PT tender has four smaller speakers. Both have good sounds. No mods required, they all have the same type of wireless tether.

You are saying then I can get the 2001 j3a Hudson and as long as it has a wireless tether the engine will be compatible with my PT tender as far as Electronics.

You can put most any TMCC wireless tether behind that one and it should function.  Even some of the early Legacy ones will work in TMCC mode, later ones moved the IR sensor so they don't work.

Will this PT Tender's RailSounds and CrewTalk work behind a conventional (Weaver) Empire State Express, like a sound upgrade without modifying the conventional engine?  Or must it communicate through the wireless tether with an engine equipped with TMCC or Legacy for the sounds to work?

You should get whistle and bell. You won't get chuff sounds unless you put a chuff switch on one of the tender wheels.

That is correct. I disagree with Pete. This tender gets whistle and bell sound commands through the wireless tether on the drawbar.

At best you might get idle steam sounds when the tender is powered up but that's it.

Rick, It has Railsounds 5. As long as it does not receive serial data through the tether it will respond in conventional mode to DC transformer offsets. This applies to virtually all command engines including Legacy steam. Try it.
